Eligibility Guidelines
To be eligible for a Blue Shield of California Foundation grant, organizations must meet the following criteria:

The mission of the grantee organization is consistent with the goals and mission of the Blue Shield of California Foundation.
- The grant is used primarily to serve Californians.
- The grantee organization has a reputation for credibility and integrity.
- The grantee organization is pursuing activities directly related to one of the Foundation’s three Program Areas: Health Care and Coverage, Health and Technology, and Blue Shield Against Violence
We Fund
- Organizations that are non-profit and tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code (IRC) and defined as a public charity under 509(a) 1, 2, or 3 (types I, II, or a functionally integrated type III)
- Accredited schools
- Units of government/public agencies
- Tribal governments
We Don’t Fund
- Award dinners, athletic events, competitions, special events, or tournaments
- Conferences or seminars
- Capital construction
- Television/film/media production
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Political causes, candidates, organizations or campaigns
- Capital projects over $50,000
- Multi-year projects (generally)
- Grants to individuals (with the exception of the regulated Blue Shield of California Employee Scholarship Program)
- Grants to 509 (a) 3, type III supporting organizations that are not "functionally integrated"
